Containment

Containment is an issue when you have a wolf-dog/wolf or even any large canine that is curious and has a wanderlust. This enclosure must be escape proof! The reason for this is, if your wolf-dog should escape any number of things could happen to him. He could be shot, hit by a car or lost.

Usually we would like to see chain link fence that is about 8ft high 9 guage with tip ins at the top, electric fencing as an added precaution and dig guard. It should be about ½ to 1 full acre in size so that your new acquisition can run if he wants to or even to get away from YOU if he so chooses.

Some people make the mistake in thinking they can keep these animals safely in their own backyards with simply a privacy fence, WRONG. Do you know what a wolf would do with a wood fence or even a malamute for that matter? Ever seen matchsticks fallen out of the box? It's about the equivalent to that. It only takes one irrisponsible person to get Breed Specific Legistlation passed in any state or county. This means if you let your wolf-dog run loose BSL could be passed in your county or state because of YOU.

Containment built the right way is extremely important.
Inadequate containment would be privacy fence, 4ft chain link fence, small pens. Some people try to keep their animals in pens that are no bigger than 12ft x 12ft. Although they are secure and escape proof they do not offer the animal any quality of life whatsoever. Usually puppy mills will use this type of containment, claiming that if an animal gets sick or injured they will be able to catch them easier or they will make some other claim that it is better for the animal in some way.

Here is a great page on containment by Pam Thompson .
